In 2022, the Cree First Nation of Waswanipi decided to build its own electricity system approximately 95 km long to connect the Waswanipi Hydro-Québec substation to the Windfall gold mine, which is operated by Osisko Mining Inc. This is a unique partnership in Quebec and Geolocation is very proud to have participated in its realization through Geolocation Énergie sencrl.

When such a project is undertaken in a remote and forested area, a multitude of factors must be taken into account to achieve the desired results. One of the most important is the environmental factor. Even before the start of the work, Géolocation was involved in the collection of photogrammetric and LiDAR data by aircraft. This data, once processed, was used to determine the optimal route and design the 120 kV power line by the engineers.

Once the necessary permits had been obtained, we proceeded to mark right-of-way boundaries, access roads, preliminary gantry locations, road crossings, borrow pits and existing transmission lines. Once the clearing was complete, we proceeded with the installation of some 489 supports for the future line. The work took place from autumn 2022 to the present day.

We are currently carrying out the legal surveying work, and the plans are scheduled to be filed with the Office of the Surveyor General of Quebec for registration of rights by Spring 2024.

This project will bring significant economic benefits to the community.

For over 40 years, Géolocation has acquired a range of knowledge and skills like few others in the industry. Our focus on employee qualification and the use of cutting-edge technologies has ensured that we can provide our customers with a service that is fully adapted to their needs, and that exceeds expectations.
